Wireless Device Policy Update

A new Indiana law prohibits students from using cell phones during the school day, including passing periods, study halls, and lunch. This is a statewide legal requirement that all public schools must implement. Over the summer, CPCSC will update our student handbooks and district policies to reflect this new law for the 26-27 school year.

Procedures at the elementary and middle school levels will remain the same, with phones turned off and stored in lockers during the school day. In addition to cell phones, the law applies to smart watches, smart glasses, tablets, etc. The legislation includes exemptions for certain students with IEPs and some medical needs.

At Crown Point High School, students will be required to keep their phones turned off and stored in their backpacks or lockers from the first bell of the day to the dismissal bell. We understand that this new law may change how some parents contact their children during the school day. To help alleviate this concern, CPCSC will turn on the Family Messaging feature in ParentSquare for CPHS students and their legal guardians listed in PowerSchool. Students will only be able to communicate with their legal guardians using this feature by being logged into StudentSquare on their Chromebook. You can read a brief overview of Family Messaging at this link. We will have more information about this feature and new procedures for CPHS students before the start of the school year. Again, the legislation includes exemptions for certain students with IEPs and some medical needs.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we navigate these required changes.
