CPHS Latin Program Hosts Summer Camp and Excels at National Convention

The Crown Point High School Latin program recently celebrated its 21st Annual Latin Summer Camp at CPHS. Thirty students in grades third through seventh attend camp from July 15 to 19. Campers explored the Classics through engaging lessons on ancient mythology, the Roman military, and archaeology, which were led by CPHS Latin students and teachers.

The week finished with a Roman Banquet, where students dressed in traditional Roman attire and enjoyed a three-course meal, complete with reenactments of mythological and historical battles. Additionally, this year featured a special guest, Blake Lopez, Harvard University's Class of 2024 Valedictorian and former camp attendee, who inspired students with his journey in the Classics.

Following the camp, CPHS Latin students shined at the 71st National Junior Classical League (NJCL) Convention held at the University of Tennessee. Crown Point High School sent five students to join 33 delegates from the Indiana Junior Classical League (IJCL) in various academic, artistic, and athletic competitions.

Senior Hayden Smith earned high honors, including 10th in Classical Art, 11th in Roman Life, and the NJCL 2024 Sister Jeanette Plante Scholarship. Junior Nic Collier placed 3rd in upper level colored pencil, while Junior Gibson Mehrle and Sophomore Joseph Stewart also achieved notable placements. Freshman Annelise Jacobi excelled with a 3rd place in Latin Oratory.

The group also won several other awards: 1st in Best Publicity Portfolio and Best Club Swag, 2nd in Overall Club of the Month, 4th in Local Digital Scrapbooks and Activities Contest, and 5th in Local Publications Contest.
